BOSTON COLLEGE HONORS PEDIATRIC CANCER PATIENTS AT FOOTBALL GAME
On October 17 at the Boston College/North Carolina State game, Boston College and the American Cancer Society partnered to honor and host five pediatric cancer patients undergoing treatment at Mass General Hospital. The five pediatric patients attended the game and were treated to a day filled with special guests ranging from the BC Eagle, Mark Herzlich*, members of multiple BC sports teams, BC cheerleaders and others. The children received VIP treatment on the field prior to the game and they were honored at half time with thousands of BC fans cheering them on as they were introduced at mid field and on the jumbotron. This special day was shared with the families and all of the BC players, coaches and fans. Boston College is already talking about incorporating this type of special day on an annual basis.
*In the spring of 2009 Mark Herzlich, BC linebacker and last year's ACC Defensive Player of the Year, was told he had Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare cancer in which cancer cells are found in the bone or soft tissue. Prior to this game, Mark announced on ESPN’s Game Day show that he is now 99% cancer free. He is determined to be back in uniform next season for the Eagles.

BOSTON COLLEGE ATHLETICS SELLING "BEAT CANCER" T-SHIRTS IN HONOR OF LINEBACKER. SHIRTS ON SALE NOW.
Boston College has produced a "Beat Cancer" T-shirt featuring an image of the school's official mascot, Baldwin the Eagle, with his face painted in a similar fashion to linebacker Mark Herzlich. BC will donate $5 from the sale of every Beat Cancer T-shirt to the American Cancer Society in support of Ewing's sarcoma research. Herzlich, the Eagles' star senior linebacker, disclosed earlier this year that he is suffering from the rare disease and will miss the 2009 season while undergoing treatment. BC will encourage all fans to wear this shirt to the October 3 game vs. Florida State as a show of unity and support for Herzlich and others in their battles to beat cancer.
